Rotary Youth Exchange: Exploring Culture, Learning Chinese

國立屏東大學國際學院華語教學中心今年再次參與國際扶輪社3510區Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE)青少年交換計畫，迎接來自德國、巴西、巴拉圭和美國的七位年輕學員，展開為期四個月的華語學習與文化探索之旅。此專班課程不僅專注於語言學習，還為學員提供了體驗臺灣文化的機會，讓他們在學習華語的過程中，能夠增進對臺灣的了解。
The Chinese Language Center at National Pingtung University's International College has once again participated in the Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) program of Rotary International District 3510, welcoming seven young participants from Germany, Brazil, Paraguay, and the United States for an enriching four-month journey of Chinese language acquisition and cultural exploration. This specialized program not only emphasizes language learning but also offers students the invaluable opportunity to engage with Taiwanese culture, thereby enhancing their understanding of Taiwan as they acquire Chinese proficiency.

在2024年9月19日的開課典禮上，國際事務長陳皇州教授歡迎學員遠道而來，同時也期許學生透過華語來體驗臺灣獨特的華人文化、深入發現屏東之美，更特別為每位學員準備專屬的中文姓名印章，作為歡迎禮。這不僅象徵著國際交換生在屏東大學的學習新篇章，也鼓勵他們更加積極地學習漢字，領略漢字的美感與文化內涵。學員們收到印章後，無不感到驚喜與感動，並期待能在接下來的課程中，親手書寫自己的中文名字，進一步探索臺灣語言和多元文化。
At the opening ceremony on September 19, 2024, Professor Chen Huang-Chou, Dean of International Affairs, extended a warm welcome to the students who had traveled from afar. He expressed his hope that the students would use Chinese as a medium through which to experience Taiwan's distinctive Chinese cultural heritage and immerse themselves in the beauty of Pingtung. As a thoughtful gesture of welcome, each student received a personalized Chinese name stamp. This gift symbolized the commencement of their academic journey at Pingtung University and was intended to inspire them to delve deeper into Chinese characters, appreciating their aesthetic qualities and cultural significance. The students were visibly touched and excited by the gesture and eagerly anticipated the opportunity to write their Chinese names by hand, further exploring Taiwan's language and its rich, diverse culture.

國際扶輪3510地區總監當選人邱綉惠女士、RYE主委蔡孟哲先生、黃聖忠副主委、蔡爵如副主委、張瓊珍委員和李美美志工等多位貴賓也蒞臨開課典禮，負責RYE計畫的蔡主委代表扶輪社致詞時，特別鼓勵學員勇於挑戰自己的能力與極限，把握這個難能可貴的華語學習機會，享受『說華語』的樂趣，為自己在這一趟特別的旅程中，創造珍貴且美好的回憶。
The opening ceremony was attended by several distinguished guests, including Ms. Chiu Hsiu-Hui, District Governor-Elect of Rotary International District 3510, Mr. Tsai Meng-Jhe, Chair of the RYE Committee, Vice Chairs Mr. Huang Sheng-Chung and Mr. Tsai Jue-Ru, Committee Member Ms. Chang Chiung-Chen, and volunteer Ms. Li Mei-Mei. In his address, Mr. Tsai, representing Rotary, encouraged the students to challenge their limits and fully embrace the opportunity to learn Chinese. He urged them to savor the joy of speaking the language and to create unforgettable memories during this exceptional experience.

華語教學中心主任黃蘭棻副教授在典禮中熱情歡迎學員，並回顧了去年專班的精彩紀錄，展示學員們如何在短短幾個月內，從零基礎逐漸掌握漢字與日常會話，並在華語能力測驗中獲得優異成績。她勉勵今年學員要勇敢挑戰自我，在學習過程中找到樂趣，融入臺灣的生活與文化。黃主任也強調，屏東大學擁有強大的華語師資團隊、熱心的教學助理和豐富的學習資源，將全力支持學員們的學習與成長。
Associate Professor Huang Lan-Fen, Director of the Chinese Language Teaching Center, also warmly welcomed the students and took the opportunity to reflect on the success of the previous year's cohort. She highlighted how students, who began with little to no knowledge of the language, were able to master Chinese characters and conversational skills in a short period, achieving outstanding results in language proficiency assessments. She encouraged this year’s students to embrace challenges with enthusiasm, find enjoyment in the learning process, and integrate themselves into Taiwan's daily life and culture. Professor Huang further emphasized that Pingtung University boasts a robust team of Chinese language instructors, dedicated teaching assistants, and an abundance of learning resources, all of which would ensure comprehensive support for the students' academic and personal development.

隨後，華語課程由黃郁庭老師正式拉開序幕。在接下來的四個月中，華語教學中心不僅安排專業的華語課程，還精心培訓本校師資生擔任華語教學助理，於課後時段，提供多元的課輔服務，進一步豐富學員的學習體驗。此外，中心特別邀請大武山學院廖宜虹副教授帶領學員和教學助理體驗象棋對弈，還有體育系陳佑副教授安排立槳和獨木舟訓練活動，讓學員與體育系學生進行體育交流，藉此促進身心健康與跨文化友誼。
The Chinese language courses were formally inaugurated with a lecture by Professor Huang Yu-Ting. Over the course of the next four months, the Chinese Language Teaching Center has arranged a rigorous academic curriculum alongside training for the university's teaching assistants to provide diverse after-class tutoring services, enriching the students' educational experience. In addition, the center has invited Associate Professor Liao Yi-Hong from the Dawo Mountain College to lead students and teaching assistants in a Chinese chess session. Additionally, paddleboarding and canoeing training will be organized by Associate Professor Chen You from the Department of Physical Education, facilitating sports exchanges with students from the department. These activities aim to promote physical health and foster cross-cultural friendships.

華語教學中心期許，國際扶輪社RYE交換生學習華語計畫能讓學員們在豐富多元的環境中成長，不僅提升華語能力，還能透過各項活動與交流，建立深厚的國際友誼。本校將持續致力於為來自世界各地的學生提供廣闊的平台，讓他們在精進語言的同時，也能體驗到臺灣的熱情與文化的多樣性。
The Chinese Language Center hopes that the RYE program will provide students with a transformative experience, allowing them to not only enhance their Chinese language skills but also to forge deep international friendships through various cultural exchanges and activities. The university remains dedicated to offering a broad and enriching platform for students from around the world, ensuring that, in addition to honing their linguistic abilities, they are also able to experience Taiwan's warmth and cultural diversity.
